Small Business Insurance Starter Kit

Twenty checkboxes that take a brand-new business from exposed to protected — built by the independent, women-owned team that has insured New Jersey businesses for more than 25 years.

Why This Checklist Exists

Starting a business is hard. Insuring one shouldn’t be.

Most new owners find out what coverage they were missing the day they need it — when a landlord demands a certificate of insurance, a client contract requires liability limits, or a burst pipe closes the shop for a month. This starter kit walks you through the decisions in order, so nothing important gets discovered the expensive way.

Omega Insurance Agency is an independent, women-owned agency in Clark, New Jersey. For over 25 years we have helped local shops, contractors, offices, and trucking and transportation companies build coverage that fits their budget, in English or Spanish. Because we are independent, we shop multiple carriers for you instead of pushing one company’s products.

Work through the five steps below, check off what you have already handled, and bring the rest to us. A quick call to (908) 355-8765 is usually all it takes to close the gaps.

The Starter Kit

Your 20-point small business insurance checklist

This page is print-friendly. Use the Print / Save as PDF button and the menus, forms, and footer disappear automatically — you get just the checklist, ready to pin to the office wall. In your browser’s print dialog, choose “Save as PDF” to keep a digital copy.
Step 1

Lay the legal foundation

Insurance is only as solid as the business structure underneath it. These four boxes come first.

  • Choose and register your business structure. An LLC or corporation separates business liabilities from your personal assets — our formations service can file it for you.
  • Get your EIN from the IRS. You need this federal tax ID to open accounts, hire employees, and buy most business policies — we can obtain your EIN as part of setup.
  • Open a dedicated business bank account. Separating business and personal money protects your liability shield and simplifies proof of income for underwriting.
  • Make a simple inventory of what you could lose. List your property, equipment, vehicles, data, and people — it becomes the map for every coverage decision below.
Step 2

Lock in the core coverages

These are the policies nearly every small business needs on day one, whatever the industry.

  • Get general liability insurance. It covers slip-and-falls, damage to other people’s property, and advertising injury — see our guide to general liability in Clark, NJ.
  • Cover your building, gear, and inventory. Commercial property insurance handles fire, theft, and storm damage that could end a young business with no cushion.
  • Ask about a Business Owner’s Policy (BOP). Bundling liability and property into one BOP usually costs less than buying the pieces separately.
  • Confirm business interruption coverage is included. It replaces lost income while you rebuild after a covered loss — the protection new owners most often skip.
Step 3

Protect your people

Employees change your legal obligations overnight. New Jersey does not give new owners a grace period.

  • Set up workers’ compensation. New Jersey requires workers’ comp for virtually every employer — even with one part-time employee.
  • Verify your state payroll registrations. NJ unemployment and temporary disability obligations begin with your first hire, and carriers will ask for your payroll figures.
  • Consider key person life coverage. If the business depends on you or one partner, key person life insurance keeps it running after the unthinkable.
  • Put basic workplace safety in writing. A short safety routine lowers claims — and claims history is what drives your premiums for years.
Step 4

Vehicles, tools & digital risk

The gaps that surprise owners most: personal policies quietly excluding business activity.

  • Insure every work vehicle with commercial auto. Personal auto policies routinely deny business-use claims — see commercial auto in Clark, NJ.
  • Add hired & non-owned auto coverage. It protects the business when employees run errands, make deliveries, or drive their own cars for work.
  • Cover tools and equipment that travel. Inland marine coverage follows your gear to job sites — standard property policies often stop at your front door.
  • Add cyber liability if you store customer data or take cards. Small businesses are a favorite ransomware target — learn what cyber insurance actually pays for.
Step 5

Review, prove & maintain

Coverage is not a one-time purchase. These habits keep your protection matched to a growing business.

  • Keep certificates of insurance ready to send. Landlords, lenders, and larger clients will ask for proof — contact us and we issue them fast.
  • Price a commercial umbrella as contracts grow. A commercial umbrella adds an extra layer of liability above your underlying policies.
  • Calendar an annual policy review. Revenue, payroll, and equipment change fast in year one — your limits should keep pace.
  • Store policies and carrier contacts where you can find them. Omega clients get 24/7 access to documents through our client portal.

Prints as a clean one-page-per-step checklist — no menus, no forms, no footer.
