Why Union is a high-traffic insurance town

- Garden State Parkway, three interchanges. - Quick access to the NJ Turnpike (I-95) via I-78. Heading east, I-78 provides direct connections to US 1-9 and Route 21 for Newark Liberty International Airport (Exits 57–58) and a full interchange with I-95, the mainline of the New Jersey Turnpike — Union’s fastest route onto the Turnpike corridor.
- US Route 22. A major east–west commercial highway runs through Union, and its carriageways split around the Garden State Parkway / Route 82 junction at the landmark Union Watersphere — a retail strip with constant turning movements in and out of storefront lots.
- Route 82 (Morris Avenue). Route 82 crosses the township and connects Union Center to Elizabeth and Springfield, tying the downtown district into the wider county road network.
- Newark Liberty International Airport, about 6 miles east. A top national air-freight hub sits within a short drive of the township, feeding cargo traffic onto the same roads Union residents use to get to work.
- The Port of New York and New Jersey. Port Newark–Elizabeth handled 8.9 million TEUs in 2025 and is the nation’s second-busiest container gateway — the freight engine keeping drayage and trucking traffic moving on I-78, US 22 and the Parkway through Union. Riverine flood exposure
The most significant flooding source in Union Township is overbank flooding from the East Branch of the Rahway River along the township’s western border, where most of the FEMA Special Flood Hazard Area — the 100-year floodplain — lies. Additional floodplain pockets exist in the central and eastern parts of town.
Levee status
FEMA notes that the Elizabeth River and Rahway River levees have not been demonstrated to meet NFIP 44 CFR 65.10 requirements for 1-percent-annual-chance flood protection. If your address sits near those corridors, flood coverage deserves a real conversation, not an assumption.
Ongoing flood-control study
Rahway River flood control remains an active concern locally: federal funding was restored in 2022 for an Army Corps feasibility study of the upper Rahway River Basin. We keep an eye on how that work affects the properties we insure.
