North Jersey is most consistently defined as seven counties — Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, and Warren — with an estimated total population of 3,905,478 as of 2024. Include Union County, where our Clark office sits on Westfield Avenue, and that figure rises to 4,499,638.
It is the densest, busiest corner of the state. Recent county estimates put Bergen at roughly 962,316 residents, Essex at about 863,002, Hudson at about 718,323, Union at about 575,345, and Passaic at about 524,118. All four New Jersey cities with populations above 100,000 sit in the northern half of the state: Newark (310,178), Jersey City (294,078), Paterson (158,735), and Elizabeth (137,302).

New Jersey TurnpikeInterstate 95
The Turnpike is a system of controlled-access toll roads that carries I-95 from Exit 6 northward. The International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association ranks it the nation’s sixth-busiest toll road and one of the most heavily traveled highways in the country. In its busiest stretch it runs a dual-dual configuration: commercial vehicles must use the outer truck roadways between Exits 6 and 14-14C — exactly the corridor that passes Newark, Elizabeth, and the port and airport complex. The Turnpike also provides direct access to Newark Liberty International Airport, the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal, and the George Washington Bridge approach in Fort Lee.
Interstate 7867.83 miles across NJ
I-78 crosses New Jersey for 67.83 miles, running from the Pennsylvania state line at Phillipsburg to the New York state line in Jersey City at the Holland Tunnel, and passing near the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal and Newark Liberty International Airport. One detail matters enormously for carriers: no hazardous goods are permitted in the Holland Tunnel at the corridor’s eastern end. If your loads include hazmat, routing and endorsements need to be discussed before dispatch, not after.
Interstate 8068.54 miles across NJ
I-80 spans 68.54 miles across New Jersey, from the Delaware Water Gap Toll Bridge at the Pennsylvania line to its eastern terminus at the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) in Teaneck, Bergen County. Along the way it crosses Warren, Sussex, Morris, Essex, Passaic, and Bergen counties — six of the seven core North Jersey counties on a single road.
Interstate 287Partial NYC beltway
I-287 is a partial beltway around New York City. It begins at the New Jersey Turnpike (I-95) in Edison and runs roughly 67.54 New Jersey miles north through Somerset, Morris, Passaic, and Bergen counties — Bridgewater, Morristown, Parsippany, and Mahwah — before ending at I-95 in Rye, New York. It has seen a significant increase in truck traffic from carriers seeking to bypass congested roads closer to New York City, which is worth knowing when you describe your radius of operation on an application.
George Washington BridgeFort Lee to Manhattan
The George Washington Bridge connects Fort Lee in Bergen County to Upper Manhattan. It is the world’s busiest motor vehicle bridge, carrying over 104 million vehicles in 2019, and the 14-lane double-deck suspension span dates to 1931. For personal auto and commercial auto alike, that volume is the plainest argument there is for reviewing your liability limits rather than defaulting to the lowest option on the page.
A port-and-warehouse economy
The Port of New York and New Jersey finished 2025 as the second-busiest U.S. port for loaded containers, with total volume reaching 8.9 million TEUs for the year. Imports rose 1.7% to 4.51 million TEUs, exports increased 6.5% to 1.44 million TEUs, and full-year rail volume grew 12.4% compared with 2024. Wikipedia’s regional profile names Newark Liberty International Airport and the Port Newark–Elizabeth Marine Terminal as North Jersey’s economic engines, and the freight that lands there has to be moved by somebody.
The warehouse side of that economy is enormous. A Rutgers Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation report found that New Jersey’s warehouses and distribution centers generate $295.8 billion in business activity statewide, employ nearly 764,000 workers directly, and support more than 1.35 million direct and indirect jobs. The same report puts personal income generated at $112.8 billion and total federal, state, and local tax revenues at $33.8 billion.
The Meadowlands remains one of the most active industrial submarkets in the region. Bergen Logistics signed a 404,000 square foot lease at the Murray Metro Distribution Center in Rutherford — the largest Meadowlands industrial lease since 2016 — and the Kingsland Meadowlands logistics development, anchored by retail giant TJX, was named the 2025 CoStar Impact Awards lease of the year for Northern New Jersey. Industrial landlord Prologis markets its North Jersey and Meadowlands properties on precisely one thing: access to I-95, I-78, and the New Jersey Turnpike.

Water, not just weather
During the remnants of Hurricane Ida in September 2021, the Hackensack, Saddle, and Passaic rivers all exceeded flood stage at the same time, and towns including Little Ferry, Moonachie, and Hackensack saw catastrophic flooding. The Passaic River basin has a documented pattern of both spring floods and fall floods, with many fall events tied to the remnants of tropical storms. Standard home and business policies do not cover flood — that takes a separate policy, and we will tell you plainly whether you should carry one.
Traffic you cannot avoid
The George Washington Bridge is the world’s busiest motor vehicle bridge, and the New Jersey Turnpike is the nation’s sixth-busiest toll road. Between the two of them sits most of the region’s commuting and freight movement. Higher traffic density means more opportunities for a loss, which is why we spend real time on liability limits, uninsured motorist coverage, and umbrella policies rather than treating them as an afterthought.
Older housing stock
Several North Jersey cities have a majority of homes built before 1960 — Passaic at 68.6%, Clifton at 68.5%, and Plainfield at 70.3%. In Paterson, over 61% of housing units were built before 1960. Older construction affects replacement cost, roof and system age questions, and which carriers will even quote the risk. It also means the coverage amount printed on a decade-old policy may no longer reflect what rebuilding actually costs.

New Jersey is home to roughly 2 million Hispanic residents, about 21.9% of the state’s population, and Hispanic workers account for 21.6% of the statewide labor force. North Jersey municipalities dominate the list of the state’s most heavily Hispanic and Latino cities. Using 2020–2024 American Community Survey data: Union City 81.8%, Dover 76.4%, West New York 75.9%, Passaic 73.3%, Elizabeth 67.4%, Guttenberg 66.8%, Fairview 65.8%, Prospect Park 64.9%, and Paterson 64.5%.

The places that anchor the region
Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park protects a 77-foot waterfall on the Passaic River; in 1792, Paterson was established as America’s first planned industrial city, centered on those falls. It is a fair summary of North Jersey itself — industry and water, side by side, for more than two centuries.
East Rutherford holds two of the region’s biggest draws. MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets, opened in 2010 and holds up to 82,500 fans. Next door at the Meadowlands Sports Complex sits American Dream, the second-largest mall in the United States at over 3 million square feet, with DreamWorks Water Park, Nickelodeon Universe, and Big SNOW under one roof.
Liberty State Park in Jersey City offers Manhattan-skyline views along with the Empty Sky Memorial and the Liberty Science Center. To the north, the George Washington Bridge links Fort Lee to Upper Manhattan. To the west, the Delaware Water Gap forms the scenic gateway where I-80 crosses into Pennsylvania.
